Of all the red carpets, in all the world, this is the one you wanna walk. Here the worlds of celebrity – art – fashion all collide in one beautifully sophisticated soirée. Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute puts together a breathtaking exhibit and a subsequently fabulous gala. This year’s theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. The effort put into curating this visually explosive conversation between East and West was the greatest ever undertaken by the institute. Thankfully the attendees of this year’s gala took the sartorial challenge of dressing for such an ambitious event with as much zeal as the event’s organizers. The list of exquisite gowns, and ornate accessories is staggering – only a thorough collection of superlatives can assist in keeping track of them all.
Most Traditional: Lady Gaga and Georgia May Jagger
Both Gaga (in Balenciaga) and Georgia (in Gucci) wowed in their East-inspired gowns, traditionally in keeping with the theme of the evening. Hopefully these looks aren’t too harshly criticized as being cultural appropriation..it’s a bit of a tricky theme to dress for.
Most Ornate: Rihanna
Winner of ‘Most Ornate’ most certainly has to be given to Rihanna. This amazing fur-trimmed, imperially embroidered cape is a stand out. Made by Chinese couturier, Guo Pei, the gown took two years to complete. Despite the hilarious memes going viral on the Internet, this red carpet look is breathtaking.
Best Pony: Beyoncé
Reminiscent of ‘I Dream of Jeannie’? Yes. Bey can do no wrong? Also, yes.
Motivation to Hit the Gym and Stop Eating Peanut Butter: Beyoncé
HOW?!
Dress Most Worthy of a Closer Look: Kim Kardashian
The intricate beading and feather work on this Cavalli gown is unbelievable – though Kayne does not seem as impressed.
Most Dynamic Duo: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
My BFFs 4ever.
Most Notable Headpiece: SJP
Girl took the theme verrrrry seriously.
Best Tribute to Star Wars on May (the) 4th (be with you): Anne Hathaway
So sith. So chic.
Best Man: Larry David
Lookin’ pretttty, pretty, good.
Most Understated Elegance: Behati Prinsloo
Simple, yet ultimately very cool in Hilfiger Collection.
Wackiest/Raddest Chick: Grimes
I am Grimes’ ultimate fan girl, so I stand by her no matter what.
Best Family Affair: The Bonet-Kravitz’s
That gene pool tho.
Cutest Couple: FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson
These 2 R 2 cute.
Slickest: Miley Cyrus
I’m kind of loving this super slick blue hair and studded, black number of Miley’s.
Best After-Party Look
Such a rad 70’s inspired look. But there’s no amount of money you could pay me to stand near enough to this young Jenner to allow for comparison. Too stunning.
Best Top Knot: Bella Hadid
Such a sophisticated and chic look Ms. Hadid was sporting. Simple and elegant.
Best Red Dress: Rita Ora
In keeping with the ‘China’ theme, many red looks were seen. Here, Rita Ora represents the joy and good fortune of the colour in a gorgeous Tom Ford gown.
Coolest/Most Unique Gown: Solange Knowles
This gorgeous gown made it onto many a ‘Worst Dressed’ list, and to that I say ‘FOOLS!’ I’m completely smitten with this Giles dress. Its circular fan shape, silver and holographic appearance, and the technical feats reached with the many minuscule little pleats are amazing. So artistic, beautiful, and fashion-forward.
Best Dressed: Emma Roberts, Kendall Jenner, and Claire Danes
These three women, all wearing varying shades of green – from kelly to jade (this is not the title of another American Idol movie) – wore my favourite looks of the evening. I loved Emma Roberts’ bright green Ralph Lauren dress, and that her accessories and beauty had pops of red and black. Kendall Jenner’s Calvin Klein dress was insanely sexy and chic, with the criss-crossed strappy sides, and high neck. Finally, Claire Danes killed it from head to toe. I’m obsessed with everything about her Valentino gown – the shade of jade, the leather sash, the shape, and the neckline. Also, her beauty was so on point – her super vampy pout and side-parted, lightly tousled hair complimented the look perfectly.
