Last night the 88th Annual Academy Awards took place…annnnnnd there’s nothing that remarkable to report. As per every year I made a point of watching all the nominated movies in the best picture, acting, and directing categories to prepare myself for Oscar night, and just like every year I realize that my tastes strongly differ from the old, white man opinions that represent the Academy. Typically I’m abuzz with excitement for the Oscars, and my brain is whirring whilst I watch, creating quips that I can remark on the following day, but this year was especially lacklustre. I felt that many of the nominees were nothing special, that a good handful of the winners were undeserving of such profound recognition and that the show itself was quite devoid of personality. However – my Oscar superlatives have become somewhat of a tradition, so I shall put my wit and observational skills to the test, and produce my own compilation of ‘Best Of’s. Continue reading
Of all the red carpets, in all the world, this is the one you wanna walk. Here the worlds of celebrity – art – fashion all collide in one beautifully sophisticated soirée. Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute puts together a breathtaking exhibit and a subsequently fabulous gala. This year’s theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. The effort put into curating this visually explosive conversation between East and West was the greatest ever undertaken by the institute. Thankfully the attendees of this year’s gala took the sartorial challenge of dressing for such an ambitious event with as much zeal as the event’s organizers. The list of exquisite gowns, and ornate accessories is staggering – only a thorough collection of superlatives can assist in keeping track of them all. Continue reading

This Monday I enjoyed a wonderful movie night filled with laughs, pizza, and guacamole. Our movie pick for the evening was the oh-so-funny Nixon comedy, Dick. Not only did it remind me of my love for films that focus on the Watergate scandal, but it also reminded me of how truly laugh-your-ass-off funny Kirsten Dunst is! I’ve been a huge fan of Kiki (part of a nickname c/o Perez Hilton, that always stuck with me) since..forever! Many of her films are those I count among my favourites, and I find myself watching them over and over again, year after year. Ms. Dunst is rad on all counts – super stylish, cool posse of friends including Sofia Coppola and Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters, and a wildly impressive filmography. As it was her birthday yesterday, let’s take a chronological look at Kirsten Dunst’s best films. Continue reading
Last night the 87th Academy Awards (but friends just call him Oscar) took place and the show was stuffed to the brim with glitz and glam. Each time the camera spanned the audience we were treated with an endless supply of our favourite stars’ beaming faces and an opportunity to judge their outfits, reactions, and merit. While the winners are set in gold, and some of my top picks weren’t deemed ‘worthy’ – in my own Rêve Head arena – I am captain, and able to decide who wins my own breed of superlatives. Enjoy! As a self-proclaimed cinephile and lover of fashion, awards season is like my Super Bowl. It combines three of my beloved passions: film, fashion, and fawning over celebrities. The red carpet offers the perfect opportunity for myself and like-minded individuals to look in on these glamorous occasions.
It’s easy to grow tired year after year, as each couch potato hour is logged viewing these broadcasts, most especially when the stars don’t shine quite as brightly as they could (yes, I have high expectations). I would take a Björk swan moment over a glittery prom number any day. Continue reading
