Style Guide: The Choker

CHOKER

An air of nostalgia? A good dose of edge? Yet, still overall chic? Not always an easy order to fill. In fact, achieving the perfect balance of all three components is quite tricky and surely would take a good amount of time spent standing in front of your wardrobe and praying you have A Beautiful Mind moment – when the right combination just jumps out at you. Or – you could make things real easy for yourself and just start wearing chokers. A choker may in fact be the most perfect accessory (though not for the faint of heart). Not only does it instantly take your look to je ne sais quoi level, but it ensures your status as one sophisticated, bad ass bitch.  Continue reading

An Ode To Grimes

Excuse me while I fan girl out of orbit for a little but – but guys – Grimes is my all time favourite. My absolute jam. Though I only happened upon her a mere 4 years ago, I’m sure, that on some spiritual level I’ve always loved her. Surely it was written in the cosmos that this was the music for me. This is where my dance moves and attempts at Mariah Carey level pitch flourish. Girly, dancey, pop-y, BUT – and this is important – very, very weird. In a GREAT way. Unique. A perspective on pop that is *fresh*, creative, and experimental. I’ve spent the last few years listening to her previous albums, VisionsGeidi Primes, and Darkbloom with abandon, but her recently released album, Art Angels, has had me completely entranced since my pre-ordered copy popped up on my iPhone 2 weeks ago. It is heaven. Continue reading

The Pinhead and Doodad Club

IMG_3118

Exhibit A: When we were kids we collected all sorts of trinkets and doodads to adorn our possessions with. We had patches, pins, and stickers coming out of our ears (and probably stuck all over our faces too). Exhibit B: Trends are cyclical. Ipso facto – patches, pins, and other quirky ‘n fun accessories are back with a vengeance and taking the millennial cohort by storm. The world is full of dreamy denim jackets, and totally rad totes, just waiting to be decorated with whimsical and quirky what-nots. Thank the accessory heavens that there are so many wonderful pin makers, patch crafters, and tote masters to choose from!  Continue reading

Festival Inspiration: Dark Western

DARK WESTERN

Yes – festivals are about the music and the truly joyous atmosphere, but they’re also very much so all about the fashion. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but for some reason I approach getting dressed for a festival the same way in which I dress for Halloween – with dizzying excitement and a specific theme in mind. I suppose I like to develop a mood or vibe for the show I’m about to view, based on the artists who are going to be there, and then my mind wanders (you don’t wanna know), and voilà my festival motif is born! This week I’m lucky enough to be seeing Lana Del Rey, Grimes, and Father John Misty (among others), and for one reason or another, my mind landed on the concept of a dark western – Spaghetti Western à la squid ink, if you will. Bizarre? Maybe. Sartorially savvy? Well, I certainly think so.  Continue reading

Blue on Blue on Blue

DOUBLE DENIM

Some things in this life are just so wrong, they’re right. Upon first consideration such glorious atrocities may be deemed too much for society to handle, or distasteful, but then it hits you – it just works, and you may not necessarily know why. And thank god for that, because such hot topic blunders tend to be absolute sartorial gold. Take for example – denim on denim. Once cursed to spend eternity on the ‘Worst Dressed List’, the Canadian Tuxedo is having a revival and looking damn good while it does. Continue reading

Met Gala Superlatives

MET GALA

Of all the red carpets, in all the world, this is the one you wanna walk. Here the worlds of celebrity – art – fashion all collide in one beautifully sophisticated soirée. Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute puts together a breathtaking exhibit and a subsequently fabulous gala. This year’s theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. The effort put into curating this visually explosive conversation between East and West was the greatest ever undertaken by the institute. Thankfully the attendees of this year’s gala took the sartorial challenge of dressing for such an ambitious event with as much zeal as the event’s organizers. The list of exquisite gowns, and ornate accessories is staggering – only a thorough collection of superlatives can assist in keeping track of them all. Continue reading

Sole Resurrection

SOLE RESSURECTION

Looking back over childhood photos, there are many outfits that I do not wish were still my size or present in my wardrobe. Such items include olive green harem-style pants with a matching olive green vest, and a white long-sleeved shirt with olive green polka dots. Another item that still baffles me to this day was my beloved purple velvet, shriner-style hat, covered in beads and gold-plated mini mirrors. These items have me wondering – what was I thinking?? However, certain items from my past, specifically my footwear, are making a powerful return to the scene. Any number of Tommy Ton Street Style photos from the most recent Fashion Weeks serve as proof that the shoes of our childhood (or at least mine) are experiencing a renaissance.  Continue reading

Rainy Daze

IMG_2394

Precipitation got you down? Yeah, me too. Once May arrives things are just fine and dandy, but until then my excitement at the changing of seasons is kept to a minimum. This is because I know the transition from winter to spring is a messy one. At first things are great c/o daylight savings time allowing for mornings to be brighter, and the evenings to arrive a little later each passing day. However, during this rainy season, the day remains grey and gloomy from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. It takes all the effort in the world to keep from crawling back under the covers and waiting out the storm. Having said that, it may just take the right rubber-wear and a sweet playlist to turn dat frown upside down. Continue reading

Style Guide: The Eccentric

THE ECCENTRICS

The Fall/Winter 2015 Collections seemed to come and go in a flash. In actuality, an entire month and many different cities were involved as the many beautiful offerings for next year’s colder seasons were presented to the masses. Overall, I can say that without a doubt I liked what I saw. I can easily get on board with the trends that seem to be forming for FW 2015 – the goth girl, the boho girl, the sweetly prim girl, and the minimalist fabric-swathed girl – but my favourite look of all was the eccentric girl. In Anticipation of the Thaw

SPRING THANGS 2

Asphalt, people. Bare and beautiful asphalt. I have been encountering more and more spots of bare asphalt in the city – and let me tell you – I’ve never been more pleased to see such a glorious sight as this grey bitumen. While the dust from the heaps of salt used this winter has only just begun to settle, there’s a new hint of hope in the air. Hope that soon all the remaining traces of winter will disappear and the sun will shine again. In anticipation of the thaw, I thought I’d share some of my favourite *spring thangs* that I can’t wait to bust out. Continue reading
