3rd Annual Oscar Superlatives

oscar

Last night the 88th Annual Academy Awards took place…annnnnnd there’s nothing that remarkable to report. As per every year I made a point of watching all the nominated movies in the best picture, acting, and directing categories to prepare myself for Oscar night, and just like every year I realize that my tastes strongly differ from the old, white man opinions that represent the Academy. Typically I’m abuzz with excitement for the Oscars, and my brain is whirring whilst I watch, creating quips that I can remark on the following day, but this year was especially lacklustre. I felt that many of the nominees were nothing special, that a good handful of the winners were undeserving of such profound recognition and that the show itself was quite devoid of personality. However – my Oscar superlatives have become somewhat of a tradition, so I shall put my wit and observational skills to the test, and produce my own compilation of ‘Best Of’s. Continue reading

An Ode To Grimes

93C865B8-8566-4C06-874F-94483C351476

Excuse me while I fan girl out of orbit for a little but – but guys – Grimes is my all time favourite. My absolute jam. Though I only happened upon her a mere 4 years ago, I’m sure, that on some spiritual level I’ve always loved her. Surely it was written in the cosmos that this was the music for me. This is where my dance moves and attempts at Mariah Carey level pitch flourish. Girly, dancey, pop-y, BUT – and this is important – very, very weird. In a GREAT way. Unique. A perspective on pop that is *fresh*, creative, and experimental. I’ve spent the last few years listening to her previous albums, VisionsGeidi Primes, and Darkbloom with abandon, but her recently released album, Art Angels, has had me completely entranced since my pre-ordered copy popped up on my iPhone 2 weeks ago. It is heaven. Continue reading

Festival Inspiration: Dark Western

DARK WESTERN

Yes – festivals are about the music and the truly joyous atmosphere, but they’re also very much so all about the fashion. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but for some reason I approach getting dressed for a festival the same way in which I dress for Halloween – with dizzying excitement and a specific theme in mind. I suppose I like to develop a mood or vibe for the show I’m about to view, based on the artists who are going to be there, and then my mind wanders (you don’t wanna know), and voilà my festival motif is born! This week I’m lucky enough to be seeing Lana Del Rey, Grimes, and Father John Misty (among others), and for one reason or another, my mind landed on the concept of a dark western – Spaghetti Western à la squid ink, if you will. Bizarre? Maybe. Sartorially savvy? Well, I certainly think so.  Continue reading

Blue on Blue on Blue

DOUBLE DENIM

Some things in this life are just so wrong, they’re right. Upon first consideration such glorious atrocities may be deemed too much for society to handle, or distasteful, but then it hits you – it just works, and you may not necessarily know why. And thank god for that, because such hot topic blunders tend to be absolute sartorial gold. Take for example – denim on denim. Once cursed to spend eternity on the ‘Worst Dressed List’, the Canadian Tuxedo is having a revival and looking damn good while it does. Continue reading

Rainy Daze

IMG_2394

Precipitation got you down? Yeah, me too. Once May arrives things are just fine and dandy, but until then my excitement at the changing of seasons is kept to a minimum. This is because I know the transition from winter to spring is a messy one. At first things are great c/o daylight savings time allowing for mornings to be brighter, and the evenings to arrive a little later each passing day. However, during this rainy season, the day remains grey and gloomy from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. It takes all the effort in the world to keep from crawling back under the covers and waiting out the storm. Having said that, it may just take the right rubber-wear and a sweet playlist to turn dat frown upside down. Continue reading

Top it Off (The Lesser Known T.Swift Hit)

EMANNUELLE ALT

I am a person who relies heavily on style icons. Aspirational dressing I like to call it. When selecting a style icon, the admiration for said individual must rely upon more than just their wardrobe. These fabulous people should not only possess the clothes we fantasize about, but also the careers, interests, perspectives and little black books that dreams are made of. I have a long list of style icons, but who sits at the top? Without hesitation, editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, Emmanuelle Alt. Her effortlessly chic approach to style is definitely a worthwhile ambition. While I drool over her beautiful collection of coats, her enviable skinny jeans, and her sophisticated stilettos – it’s her fantastic hats that I covet most of all. Continue reading

Take Me Out To The Met Ball

MET 2013_edited-1

Dree / Nicole / Miley / Sienna

There are certain events every year that cause you to wake up early the following day in order to troll the interweb seeking the dazzling photos of the previous night’s delightful fashions. The Golden Globes, Coachella, and the Oscars provide such excitement for those of us who worship at the altar of style. But for true fashionistas who know their stuff, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala OR put more simply, the Met Ball, is the crown jewel of such events. Continue reading

The Killin’-It List

Confession: I am a total Kardashian Junkie. As a beloved ‘lady’ once said, SO WHAT? WHO CARES?! People love to hate on them, love to point out how they are just a manifestation of the troubled frame of mind our generation is in. I could care less. The show provides me with mindless entertainment in a world where my brain is constantly overwhelmed with external stressors, where the family’s candor cracks me up and honestly, makes me cry on the regular. So that’s my dirty little secret: I’m a Kardashian fan. Big. Frickin’. Whoop. Continue reading

SPOTTED: Spots

 Cruella

It’s taking some time to adjust my way of thinking during this seasonal transition period. My brain has been wired for the last many months to focus on: CHUNKY KNITS. DOWN FILLED JACKETS. ELECTRIC BLANKET CLOTHING. In order to re-wire the old noggin’, I’m dreaming of what I want to wear this spring, whilst I frolic down the sun-saturated streets.

MFW: The Clothing of My People

GUCCCCI

Gucci Look 1 / Look 2 / Look 3 / Look 4 / Look 5

Fashion “week” has moved on to the land of my ancestors, the Old Country as it were, Italy! Now, my family is not from Milan, they’re from Sulmona, meaning I must distantly be related to Ovid (this explains my way with words…HA!). I’m a very proud Italian: I love me some spaghetti, am a fan of opera, and am a loyal follower of the country’s many amazing designers.

Milan Fashion Week thus far has offered many beautiful collections for Fall 2014, but I think I’ll just focus on a handful of my favourites.
