If you’re an offbeat kinda gal, with a witty sense of humour and knack for saying strange things, then your favourite films probably feature quirky leading ladies. You take notes while you watch movies such as Sixteen Candles to learn exactly what eccentric qualities Molly Ringwald possesses and that ultimately bag her the local hunk. These characters, whose quirkiness turn out to be their most prized possession and their best cool dude bait, inspire us – the unconventional – to put our eccentricities on display, never stifle our wackiness, and to always be ourselves. QUARTER-LIFE-CRISIS

We’ve all been well trained (via pop culture) to spot the tell-tale signs of a mid-life crisis:

  • newly purchased, brightly coloured, flashy sports car
  • equally novel, brightly coloured, flashy clothing (often unbuttoned to reveal said mid-lifer’s chest)
  • mayhaps some thoughtfully purchased nips and tucks

I am she as you are she as she is me

Sure, sure, sure, Lena Dunham is great. The “voice of our generation”, “it’s like looking in a mirror”, “she totally gets me” all that jazz. And while I am a GIRLS fan, as the series progresses, I feel less and less like me, myself, and I (a 26 year old scatter-brain) are being represented by the characters.

I was beginning to think the silver screen was losing its touch with reality, that it didn’t understand who the young woman trying to find her way through this mess called life really was. And then I saw Noah Baumbach’s, Frances Ha.
