Marc Jacobs Look 1 / Look 2 / Look 3 / Look 4 / Look 5 / Look 6 / Look 7

Not that I’ve ever actually been to fashion week, but from what I hear, the Marc Jacobs show is one that everyone most looks forward to. I can understand why. The sets of his shows are elaborate and take the viewer to another world, while the clothes themselves are always beautiful and interesting. I just finished watching the live stream of his Fall 2014 collection, and I feel as though I’ve been hypnotized. Continue reading

Marchesa Look 1 / Look 2 / Look 3 / Look 4 / Look 5

Another day in New York, and another slew of collections showing loyal fashion followers what the upcoming Fall 2014 season is going to look like. The day wasn’t quite as exciting as I had hoped, but there were still some shows that really sparked my interest.

To begin my dissection of February 12th, let’s start with Marchesa.

Rodarte Look 1 / Look 2 / Look 3 / Look 4 / Look 5

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, sadly my blogging skills have not been (thanks to academic endeavours), so I’ve got some catching up to do.Over the past few days the cat walks of the Big Apple have really got my fashion spidey senses tingling.

Rodarte has long been one of my very favourite labels. Kate and Laura Mulleavy are true artists and I’ve always applauded them for being so bold in their inspiration. For Fall 2014, the Mulleavy sisters definitely delivered. It felt like their older collections, when things were quirky and in a way “arts and craftsy” (I mean this as a compliment, as they do it so well). Other than a few of the smocked dresses, and the drawstring high-waisted pants, I’m a huge fan of the collection.

Alternative Angst

One of my all time favourite t.v. shows has to be My-So-Called Life. At the time the show was originally aired I was 6 years old and not quite of the Angela Chase era. However, in high school the Family Channel aired re-runs late at night, and I instantly became hooked. There are countless reasons why I enjoyed the show, many of which having to do with Jared Leto’s character, Jordan Catalano (Jordan Catalano’s choker, Jordan Catalano’s hair, Jordan Catalano’s wall-leaning skills, Jordan Catalano’s dyslexia…), but also the cast’s wardrobe was pretty rad.

Claire Danes skulked around in loose fitted, burgundy babydoll tees, with plaid shirts tied around the waist, and her bestie, Rayanne Graff, was always sporting interesting getups that involved denim, daisies, macramé, and braids. The show acted as a time capsule of the 90’s, and with it the Seattle sound sub-genre.  Continue reading

Dion Lee Look 1/Look 2/Look 3

New York Fashion Week is in full force, which means my dream expansion of my wardrobe is very carefully being planned as well. February 6th showcased some unbelievable apparel that I would die to get my hands on.

The first show that I really loved was Australian, Dion Lee’s. The girl sporting these minimalist duds is one cool chick. The subdued hues and all black everything looks were my favourite. Also the range of fabrications is something to marvel at. I would be more than happy to cuddle up in the super soft knits that look beyond cozy, but still very chic. The halter dresses and tops featuring a criss-crossed lattice of snakeskin were the perfect ratio of cool sophistication. One of my top looks from the collection was the all black leather pant ensemble finished off with a beau chapeau. It brought to mind an image of the independent Mattie Ross from True Grit, but instead of running around Texas, she’s in the Australian outback looking oh-so-stylish. Continue reading

I have a keratin related confession to make: I’ve only had a professional manicure done once in my life. You can pick your dropped jaws up off the table, I assure you I am not a street urchin.

I’ve just never really enjoyed the process of pampering. When I was at camp and we did massage trains (a line of  cross-legged kids, giving what they think are soothing massages) I always volunteered to go at the caboose where my surely knotted back would avoid any kneading. When I go to the hair salon and the hair dresser begins to really get into it with fancy moves my shoulders shoot up to my ears in tense protestation. I twiddle my thumbs and bear the unwanted scalp hydromassage until it’s over.

I gave manicures a chance once, but the experience was so unpleasant I’ve never tried it again.

Navy Seal of Approval

Since the age of 4, when a slick pair of strirrup pants were handed down to me, I’ve had a love for leather (or leather like) garments. These particular pantaloons were definitely not leather, and more of a shiny raincoat material, but still I was infatuated. In fact, upon further reflection it is possible I dreamt these pants up, but I have a distinct recollection of shedding tears over a coordinated black outfit, with hot pink roses, and a shiny, unknown material. Clearly a child of high-brow taste was I. Continue reading

As a self-proclaimed cinephile and lover of fashion, awards season is like my Super Bowl. It combines three of my beloved passions: film, fashion, and fawning over celebrities. The red carpet offers the perfect opportunity for myself and like-minded individuals to look in on these glamorous occasions.

It’s easy to grow tired year after year, as each couch potato hour is logged viewing these broadcasts, most especially when the stars don’t shine quite as brightly as they could (yes, I have high expectations). I would take a Björk swan moment over a glittery prom number any day. Continue reading
