Interests Include Frocks and Flicks

BEST THIS WEEK

This week, the second full week of the year 2015, seemed fairly unremarkable. In fact, it was rather dull. We’re embarking on that portion of the winter season where the days begin to blend into one another – one shade of grey bleeding more grey into the next, until we’re drowning in a pool of grey and pleading with Jack Frost to give us just a few moments of thaw. It is on these dull days that I am especially thankful for people like Monsieur Galliano and Oscar to brighten and inspire. Continue reading

Designer Deathmatch: Chanel vs. Victoria’s Secret Edition

KARL'S ANGELS

Yesterday two Colosseum worthy fashion events took place – one in London, England; the other Salzberg, Austria. Now, I hate to pit two stylistically inclined contenders against one another, but the match up is just too perfect to ignore. In the picturesque hills of Salzberg, where visions of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer come to mind, Karl Lagerfeld presented his latest Métiers d’Art show – and it was absolutely exquisite. Meanwhile, in bustling (emphasis on bust) London, Victoria’s Secret put on their annual extravaganza ripe with glitter, feathers, and ab envy that will last us until next year. The two collections could not be more different: one’s demure, the other flashy, but both are equally highly anticipated events, and surprisingly – the design inspiration was rather similar. Take Me Out To The Met Ball

MET 2013_edited-1

Dree / Nicole / Miley / Sienna

There are certain events every year that cause you to wake up early the following day in order to troll the interweb seeking the dazzling photos of the previous night’s delightful fashions. The Golden Globes, Coachella, and the Oscars provide such excitement for those of us who worship at the altar of style. But for true fashionistas who know their stuff, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala OR put more simply, the Met Ball, is the crown jewel of such events. Continue reading

The Killin’-It List

Confession: I am a total Kardashian Junkie. As a beloved ‘lady’ once said, SO WHAT? WHO CARES?! People love to hate on them, love to point out how they are just a manifestation of the troubled frame of mind our generation is in. I could care less. The show provides me with mindless entertainment in a world where my brain is constantly overwhelmed with external stressors, where the family’s candor cracks me up and honestly, makes me cry on the regular. So that’s my dirty little secret: I’m a Kardashian fan. Big. Frickin’. Whoop. Continue reading

SPOTTED: Spots

 Cruella

It’s taking some time to adjust my way of thinking during this seasonal transition period. My brain has been wired for the last many months to focus on: CHUNKY KNITS. DOWN FILLED JACKETS. ELECTRIC BLANKET CLOTHING. In order to re-wire the old noggin’, I’m dreaming of what I want to wear this spring, whilst I frolic down the sun-saturated streets.

Fin de Semaine Best In Show

GAGA

Weekend attire can go one of three ways:

  1. You’re in the mood to get all gussied up and perhaps paint the town red.
  2. You’re having a casual weekend, and a nice pair of jeans and cozy, chic sweater is all that you require to hit the flea and farmer’s markets.
  3. You’re taking full advantage of the end of the week to stay in, full on hermit style: same flannel, leggings, and cozy socks day after day.

Leave it to Lady Gaga to up the ante and sport this amazing look this weekend.

Fashion “week” has moved on to the land of my ancestors, the Old Country as it were, Italy! Now, my family is not from Milan, they’re from Sulmona, meaning I must distantly be related to Ovid (this explains my way with words…HA!). I’m a very proud Italian: I love me some spaghetti, am a fan of opera, and am a loyal follower of the country’s many amazing designers.

Milan Fashion Week thus far has offered many beautiful collections for Fall 2014, but I think I’ll just focus on a handful of my favourites.

Coveted Cut

blunt cutKylie / Noomi / Zanna

In terms of haircuts, I’ve always been mildly adventurous. No, I have never dyed my locks (unless spray painting it black to be Wednesday Addams counts), nor have I ever had a perm (I would probably look like a strange Italian poodle), but I’ve had my fair share of bold looks.

In grade 4, after being so deeply inspired by Posh Spice, I chopped my hair into the ever popular Girl Power Bob. I seriously thought I was the 10 year old spitting image of Victoria herself. In grade 6, just as my hair had grown long enough to be twisted into a bun, I decided to shock my classmates after Christmas break by styling my ‘do into a super short Winona Ryder inspired pixie cut. I think the boys were far too dumbfounded to tease me about it, which was a bonus. Due to that haircut taking a few years (including a prolonged pig-tail with bra-strap hairband phase) to grow out, I played it pretty safe through high school with Mary-Kate influenced cuts. My undergrad years proved to be a little more exciting, and I sported a sleek bob for the majority of those years. After growing that bob out (due to being an unemployed post-grad), I now have super long, super straight, pretty nondescript hair. But the urge to throw caution to the wind and make the cut is returning. Continue reading

Ahhhhh a sweet vacation from school, sadly this means I have had my MacBook closed for the past 3 days…but upon starting it up and rushing to style.com to see the latest offerings from London Fashion Week, I realized I had been greatly missing out on a feast for the eyes. All through New York Fashion Week I just kept thinking “IS IT TIME FOR PARIS YET?!” and kind of forgot to anticipate London’s week…what a foolish lack of thought. Thus far London Fashion Week has shown amazing and truly unique collections that have me thinking outside of my typical monochromatic-minimalist comfort zone. Continue reading
