Rainy Daze

Precipitation got you down? Yeah, me too. Once May arrives things are just fine and dandy, but until then my excitement at the changing of seasons is kept to a minimum. This is because I know the transition from winter to spring is a messy one. At first things are great c/o daylight savings time allowing for mornings to be brighter, and the evenings to arrive a little later each passing day. However, during this rainy season, the day remains grey and gloomy from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. It takes all the effort in the world to keep from crawling back under the covers and waiting out the storm. Having said that, it may just take the right rubber-wear and a sweet playlist to turn dat frown upside down. Continue reading

Just Eat It: Cauliflower

CAULIFLOWERAs I was not raised particularly religiously – Veggie Tales was not a big part of my upbringing. I got my morals from my mama, and my love for veggies from Jamie Oliver. The ever-so-charming Brit had a show where he taught littler ones the benefits of healthy eating and of better acquainting themselves with all the vegetables of the rainbow. Ever since falling hook, line, and sinker for the Naked Chef’s healthy preachings I now view avocados as being aces, broccoli is my beloved and kale is king. As of late I’ve added a new and adaptable veggie to my liturgy. Continue reading

Style Guide: The Eccentric

THE ECCENTRICS

The Fall/Winter 2015 Collections seemed to come and go in a flash. In actuality, an entire month and many different cities were involved as the many beautiful offerings for next year’s colder seasons were presented to the masses. Overall, I can say that without a doubt I liked what I saw. I can easily get on board with the trends that seem to be forming for FW 2015 – the goth girl, the boho girl, the sweetly prim girl, and the minimalist fabric-swathed girl – but my favourite look of all was the eccentric girl. Quirky Girl Tactics to Try

IMG_2379

If you’re an offbeat kinda gal, with a witty sense of humour and knack for saying strange things, then your favourite films probably feature quirky leading ladies. You take notes while you watch movies such as Sixteen Candles to learn exactly what eccentric qualities Molly Ringwald possesses and that ultimately bag her the local hunk. These characters, whose quirkiness turn out to be their most prized possession and their best cool dude bait, inspire us – the unconventional – to put our eccentricities on display, never stifle our wackiness, and to always be ourselves. Here are some truly odd tactics that our favourite quirky girls have done.  Continue reading

Hermit Lyfe Confessions

BLISS

Joseph Campbell – philosopher and scholar – coined the ever-popular phrase: follow your bliss. I’m sure you’ve seen this before, in the form of an inspirational poster – written in a cute, girly sprawl, and blooming with whimsically painted flowers. Campbell said, “Wherever you are—if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.” So wise, and if you want to take the time to meditate on this belief, then I’m sure your life will become all the more meaningful. But here at Rêve Head, I’d rather take an abstruse concept and dumb it down a bit. My bliss involves Netflix and take-out. What about you? Continue reading

Friendz 4eva XoXo

GIRLTRIBEZ

As the ‘fairer sex’, we’re told to stick together. Keep your wing women close and your frenemies even closer. Since kindergarten we make friends, play nice, and achieve BFFAEAEAE status. Most of the time these friendships are cupcakes, sprinkles, and shared trips to the lavatory, but sometimes, as it was so insightfully depicted in the movie Mean Girls, these ‘friendships’ can seem more like a lesson in navigating the hierarchy of the wild. Either you’re banding together as a tribe to stand as one, or you’re sworn frenemies. As the old saying goes “it ain’t easy being a girl”, but being a part of a kick a$$ girl tribe certainly helps! Which famous tribe would you want to be a member of??

In Anticipation of the Thaw

SPRING THANGS 2

Asphalt, people. Bare and beautiful asphalt. I have been encountering more and more spots of bare asphalt in the city – and let me tell you – I’ve never been more pleased to see such a glorious sight as this grey bitumen. While the dust from the heaps of salt used this winter has only just begun to settle, there’s a new hint of hope in the air. Hope that soon all the remaining traces of winter will disappear and the sun will shine again. In anticipation of the thaw, I thought I’d share some of my favourite *spring thangs* that I can’t wait to bust out. Continue reading

2nd Annual Oscar Superlatives

OSCAR SUPERLATIVES

Last night the 87th Academy Awards (but friends just call him Oscar) took place and the show was stuffed to the brim with glitz and glam. Each time the camera spanned the audience we were treated with an endless supply of our favourite stars’ beaming faces and an opportunity to judge their outfits, reactions, and merit. While the winners are set in gold, and some of my top picks weren’t deemed ‘worthy’ – in my own Rêve Head arena – I am captain, and able to decide who wins my own breed of superlatives. Enjoy! Here’s Oscar!

OSCARS 2014

After weeks of being a couch potato and committing wholeheartedly to watching a very long list of films – OSCAR NIGHT HAS ARRRRRRIVED! It’s always been a fun ritual of mine that I most likely take too seriously. As a young, blossoming cinephile I would stay up well past my bedtime to watch as the  shiny gold statues were doled out to glamorous celebrities that I probably didn’t recognize. Now, I carefully plan the categories I’m interested in, learn as much as I can about the films and their actors, and form my own *humble* opinions about who deserves the mighty Academy nod of approval. Top it Off (The Lesser Known T.Swift Hit)

EMANNUELLE ALT

I am a person who relies heavily on style icons. Aspirational dressing I like to call it. When selecting a style icon, the admiration for said individual must rely upon more than just their wardrobe. These fabulous people should not only possess the clothes we fantasize about, but also the careers, interests, perspectives and little black books that dreams are made of. I have a long list of style icons, but who sits at the top? Without hesitation, editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, Emmanuelle Alt. Her effortlessly chic approach to style is definitely a worthwhile ambition. While I drool over her beautiful collection of coats, her enviable skinny jeans, and her sophisticated stilettos – it’s her fantastic hats that I covet most of all. Continue reading
